A Herd of Giraffe Garden Sculptures

Curvaceous, contemporary metal garden sculptures and garden art

The Giraffe’s are our latest garden sculptures, a new design thats more of a contemporary sculpture, than a straight replica. I particularly like the large circular holes to represent the patchy skin of a Giraffe, it’s something I spent some time thinking about. As usual the simple solutions always seem to look the best.

I’ve made the Giraffe’s from 8mm metal to give added strength to the slender neck and legs. The larger of the sculptures stands at 2 meters and smaller at 1.5 meters and have extended legs that simply slot into the ground or can be concreted in for extra security. The sculptures have a rusted finish that is in it’s early stages of development in the photos and is glowing in the warm winter light. The sculptures could also be galvanised and treated to give a mock lead finish.

We’ve had the first pair in our own garden for a week or so before delivery and have grown rather fond of them, I think we may have to make another two for ourselves. Can’t quite decide whether to place the sculptures in open garden or among trees as if they were feeding.

Delivery – the Giraffe’s are make to order and it usually takes around five weeks to complete the work. We treat the surface with a rust accelerator so the sculptures arrive with the rusted finish in it’s early stages of development.

Dimensions – please see the diagram below for dimensions.

Installation is easy– The legs of the sculptures have been extended and enlarged to allow for easy installation and can be placed straight into compacted earth or concreted in. Simply push the sculpture into the ground. If the ground is hard, we’ve found it helps to make a make a slot in the ground with a garden spade and push the foot into the slot using a slight rocking motion, watering the ground also helps when the soil is baked hard. If you hit rubble or tree roots dig a small hole to the required depth and be sure to really compact the earth when filling in around the feet of the Giraffe.
Delivery– The Giraffe sculptures are made to order and we aim to have them ready for delivery in about 6 to 8 weeks  from the receipt of your order. We will contact you shortly before your sculptures are ready with delivery details. Please do get in touch if you have any questions about delivery or installation. If you need the sculptures sooner please contact us and we will do our best to get them to you for the required date.

The delivery cost for mainland UK is £4.50 per order. For the Highlands and Islands please contact us

Sculpture Finish / Aftercare – Our sculptures are supplied with the rusting process well under way and you will find that the colour will continually evolve with time particularly during in the fist year. During the first year it’s quite common for the surface to flake, The flaking is all part of the rusting process, its the layer of mill scale that’s formed when the steel is manufactured. Eventually the whole deer will peel it’s layer of scale becoming darker. Then over a period of about six months it will gradually turn and settle down to a more golden colour with a slight mottling.

Any scuffs or marks to the surface will gradually disappear over time as the rust patina develops. Birds do seem to make a habit of leaving their mark on the sculptures. From experience we have found the best way of removing them is to scrub the marks with an old toothbrush and a little water.
