We recently discovered an amazing cafe that’s made from steel and it’s only half an hour down the road. East Beach Cafe, situated on the seafront at Littlehampton was designed by Thomas Heatherwick and its whole shell is formed from of 8mm thick mild steel. It’s unusual shape was inspired by the worn contours of weather beaten driftwood and was constructed locally in sections and taken to site where the whole thing was welded together and since it opened in 2007, the cafe has won more than 20 national and international awards for design, architecture, steelwork, craftsmanship and engineering.

We went on a stormy evening, looking out from the cosy interior at the huge waves crashing onto the beach. The special that night was fish, chips and prosecco for a tenner. If you are down on the south coast and in the area its well worth a visit.
